Protein After 40: Why You Probably Need More Than You Think
The RDA for protein was designed to prevent deficiency, not optimize muscle preservation. After 40, the gap between adequate and optimal becomes consequential.
The standard recommendation for protein, 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, is accurate as a minimum to prevent deficiency in sedentary adults. It was never designed as an optimization target. For adults over 40 who want to maintain muscle mass, support metabolic health, and age with physical resilience, research consistently points to 1.6-2.2 grams per kilogram per day, roughly double the RDA.
Anabolic Resistance: Why Older Adults Need More
Starting in your late 30s and accelerating through your 40s and 50s, muscle protein synthesis becomes less efficient, a phenomenon called anabolic resistance. A 25-year-old and a 55-year-old can eat the same protein dose post-workout, but the 55-year-old builds significantly less muscle from it. The compensatory strategy: increase total intake and ensure adequate leucine (the key trigger for muscle protein synthesis) at each meal, requiring roughly 30-40 grams of complete protein per sitting.
Distribution Matters as Much as Total
Research from Dr. Stuart Phillips at McMaster University shows muscle protein synthesis is maximized by distributing protein across 3-4 meals of 30-40 grams each, rather than concentrating intake in one large dinner. The common pattern of a low-protein breakfast, moderate lunch, and protein-heavy dinner leaves the anabolic machinery under-stimulated for most of the day.

Higher protein intake is safe for healthy adults with normal kidney function. The concerns about kidney damage from high protein apply to people with pre-existing kidney disease, not to the general population.
