The Microbiome Revolution: What Your Gut Is Actually Doing (and Why It Matters)

The human gut contains approximately 38 trillion microorganisms, bacteria, fungi, archaea, and viruses, collectively called the microbiome. Diversity Is the Key Metric
The single best marker of microbiome health is diversity, the number of distinct species present and the evenness of their distribution. Higher diversity correlates with better immune regulation, lower inflammation, healthier body composition, and even better response to cancer immunotherapy.
What Builds a Healthy Microbiome

- ✓Polyphenols: plant compounds in berries, olive oil, dark chocolate, and tea are selectively fermented by beneficial bacteria.
- ✓Sleep and stress management: the gut-brain axis runs bidirectionally; sleep deprivation and chronic stress rapidly alter microbiome composition.
What Damages It
- ✓Antibiotics: even a single 5-day course can alter composition for 6-12 months; use only when medically necessary
- ✓Ultra-processed foods: emulsifiers (polysorbate 80, carboxymethylcellulose) disrupt the protective mucus layer
- ✓PPIs (acid reflux drugs): alter gut pH and promote pathogenic overgrowth
- ✓Chronic stress and poor sleep
