The wellness industry has turned "toxins" into a marketing device. Some environmental exposures are genuine health concerns. Others are not. Here's how to tell the difference.

"Toxins" has become one of the most abused words in wellness marketing. Detox teas, liver cleanses, foot pads, and juice fasts all promise to remove unspecified "toxins", despite your body already having a sophisticated clearance system in the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and lungs. Most detox products address a problem that either doesn't exist or requires genuine medical intervention. That said, real environmental chemical exposures are a legitimate and underappreciated health concern, they just aren't addressed by supplements.

Exposures With Real Evidence

  • Mercury: primarily from large, long-lived fish (shark, swordfish, king mackerel, albacore tuna). Limit these; prioritize wild salmon, sardines, and mackerel.
  • BPA and phthalates (endocrine disruptors): found in plastics, food can linings, and thermal receipt paper. Switch to glass or stainless for food storage; minimize canned food.
  • PFAS ("forever chemicals"): found in non-stick cookware, water-resistant textiles, and food packaging. Switch to cast iron or stainless; check EWG's tap water database.
  • Lead: still present in old plumbing (homes built before 1986). Use a certified water filter if your home has older pipes.
  • Fine particulate matter (PM2.5): one of the highest-impact environmental health risks. A HEPA air purifier meaningfully reduces indoor exposure.

What's Not Worth Worrying About

Detox cleanses don't work, your liver processes continuously and doesn't benefit from juice fasts. Activated charcoal in a supplement context can actually impair absorption of medications and nutrients. "Heavy metal cleansing" protocols without confirmed elevation via proper testing (blood lead, urine heavy metals) are at best useless and at worst cause redistribution of metals that were safely sequestered.

The highest-return toxin-reduction actions: switch to non-plastic food containers, run a HEPA air purifier in your bedroom, check tap water quality at EWG.org, and choose low-mercury fish. These are cheap, evidence-based, and don't require buying anything from a wellness brand.
