Inflammation Markers: The Silent Signal Your Blood Work Is Probably Missing
Chronic low-grade inflammation drives heart disease, cognitive decline, and accelerated aging, yet most standard labs miss it entirely. Here's what to test and what to do.
Inflammation is your immune system's emergency response, vital and purposeful in the short term. The problem is when it doesn't turn off. Chronic low-grade inflammation, sometimes called "inflammaging," drives cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and metabolic dysfunction. Most standard annual labs are poorly equipped to catch it.
The Tests That Actually Matter
Standard CRP detects acute infection, not subtle chronic inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) measures the same protein at far lower concentrations. Target: below 0.8 mg/L. Above 3.0 mg/L signals significantly elevated disease risk even in people who feel fine. Homocysteine, an amino acid byproduct that damages arterial walls, is rarely included in standard panels despite being highly modifiable. Optimal: below 7 μmol/L, responsive to methylated B vitamins.
What Drives Chronic Inflammation
- ✓Excess visceral (abdominal) fat, adipose tissue secretes inflammatory cytokines continuously
- ✓Poor sleep, even one night of reduced sleep measurably elevates inflammatory markers
- ✓Ultra-processed foods, seed oils, refined sugars, and additives promote gut permeability
- ✓Chronic stress, sustained cortisol dysregulates immune function
- ✓Gut dysfunction, increased intestinal permeability allows bacterial byproducts into circulation
- ✓Gum disease, one of the most underappreciated drivers of systemic inflammation
Bringing It Down
The most powerful anti-inflammatory intervention isn't a supplement, it's sleep. Seven to nine hours of quality sleep consistently reduces hs-CRP and IL-6 more effectively than most pharmaceuticals. After sleep: aerobic exercise, weight management, and a whole-food Mediterranean-style diet have the strongest evidence base.
Ask your physician for hs-CRP and homocysteine by name. Standard CRP, which many labs run by default, is designed to detect infection, not the low-grade chronic inflammation most relevant to long-term health.
